How to CHARM Your Wellness

The five foundations of feeling fab at 55+.

CHARM is my whole approach to wellness in midlife, in one word. It isn’t a detox, a diet, or a punishing regime. It’s five simple, kind foundations that work with your body rather than against it: Connection, Hydration, Activation, Relaxation and Movement. Here’s what each one means, and one small thing you can do today.

Why CHARM

Getting older is arithmetic. Getting old is a choice. Proageing isn’t about fighting your age or chasing youth. It’s about firing up, with energy, clarity and confidence for the years ahead. CHARM is how: five foundations, each grounded in good evidence, each doable in a real life. It’s my own five-part method for supporting healthspan, which means the years you live in good health rather than simply the years you live.

C · Connection
No one thrives alone. Connection, friendship, belonging, the sense of being seen, is as good for your body as it is for your heart, and has been shown to support physical and mental health, right down to how well you think. Curate a wider circle, not only the friends who are busy with their own lives. Volunteer. Pay someone a compliment for no reason.

Today: put one date in the diary to reach out to someone.

H · Hydration
Water is our most essential nutrient, and after menopause it matters more, not less: as oestrogen falls, your body holds water less well at a cellular level. Brain fog, fatigue, dry skin, stiff joints and the mid-afternoon dip are often part of the same story. It’s also one of the simplest things to put right.
Today: a large glass of water before your morning coffee, then roughly one an hour.

A · Activation
The most distinctive of the five. Instead of adding more from the outside, activation is about switching on systems your body already has, like the Nrf2 pathway, your master switch for making protective antioxidant enzymes, which quietens as we age. This is where the science I find most exciting lives, and it deserves a page of its own.
Explore Activation

R · Relaxation
Rest isn’t a reward for getting everything done; it’s a foundation. Active restoration, stilling the noise, breathing, genuinely switching off, lets your body recover and recharge. Choose it and invest in it, the way you would anything that matters.
Today: ten unhurried minutes that are only yours.

M · Movement
Not about how you look; about what your body can do. Walking, consistently and ideally in natural light, is one of the most evidence-backed things you can do for your heart, bones, blood sugar and mood. You don’t need a gym or a plan, just your shoes.
Today: a ten-minute walk after your main meal.

And a bonus: Sleep
Get the five foundations working and sleep tends to follow. Morning daylight, movement, good hydration and real relaxation all feed better nights, and better nights make everything else easier.
